I’ll be honest: I haven’t always been great at setting goals. For the longest time, it felt like a frustrating cycle—set goals, barely achieve them, and recycle them for the next year. As a choleric and a bit of a perfectionist, this bothered me deeply.

But 2023 was my turning point. I decided to switch things up. Instead of aiming for elaborate, picture-perfect goals, I simplified. I broke my goals into categories and focused on taking realistic steps rather than expecting a flawless transformation in 365 days. Game-changer!

Step 1: Involve God.
Let’s be real—trying to crush audacious goals without consulting the Author of time? That’s a bold (and not-so-wise) move. I pray over the entire process, asking for clarity and guidance. And here’s a pro tip: don’t get caught up in comparing your goals to everyone else’s. It’s so easy to feel intimidated at the start of the year, but resist that urge. Take your time, walk your own race, and block out the noise.

Step 2: Choose a Word for the Year.
Having a “word of the year” has been a powerful way to stay grounded and intentional. It helps me track my progress and adjust as needed. Remember, your goals aren’t set in stone. If God redirects your path, embrace it.

In 2023, my word was impact—impact in my marriage, family, work, finances, and beyond. In 2024, it was unstoppable. By February, God laid a new word on my heart: humility. It clicked—how can you truly be unstoppable if you haven’t mastered humility?

Step 3: Pray and Plan Early.
I’ve developed a habit of praying and planning for the new year months in advance. By November 2024, I was already reflecting on 2025 during quiet moments—listening to music, a sermon, or while planning for work. That’s when God gave me my theme for 2025: Second Mile Service. It’s about going the extra mile in seven key areas: spiritual, financial, career, intellectual, fitness, family, and social.

Step 4: Set Achievable Goals.
Don’t overwhelm yourself with unattainable goals. Yes, stretch beyond your comfort zone, but focus on impactful, realistic steps. Achieving smaller goals boosts your confidence and motivates you to keep going.

So as you step into 2025, remember to go at your own pace, seek God’s guidance, and give yourself grace. You’ve got this—and as always, I’m rooting for you!
